An Unconvenient Truth?
A visit to the SPH today was such an eye-opening experience. We didn't go to the headquarters which would have been really boring but instead, we went to the printing press at Jurong.
Well, unfortunately we didn't get the witness any papers being printed but just describing the whole process and efforts to print the paper gives me a new respect for it.
Everything there is automated and the machines are incredibly brilliant. You know they exist in the world but to actually see it in operation makes it so tangible.
Yea, all that aside, the thing that was really disturbing was the amount of paper used each day.
Apparently, 300 rolls of paper are used everyday.
Nothing big? Well, 1 roll of paper has a distance of 20km when rolled completely out. That works out to 6000km long of paper used each day.
The first 600 - 800 copies of newspapers printed are waste paper cause the ink and print is really bad.
Everything is automated up to the bundling of the stacks of newspapers, so when the machines sense that the paper isn't aligned properly, it gets thrown out. More wastage.
"95% of the papers are recycled, only 5% are originals".
Yea sure, 5% of the 300 rolls, 6000 km long paper each day. Just for Singapore.
Imagine how MUCH paper is used on print every single day.
Maybe there should be a joint effort one day where every single country in the world stops press for just ONE day. Because of that one day, our planet will probably live a century longer.
I'm just as concerned about global-warming as the person beside me. But really, is there a need to be concerned. We can do so much to prevent it, yada yada. Our indulgences have become our neccessities which is killing us, so just convert these indulgences back to actual neccessities.
HAHA, easier said than done.
It's quite interesting don't you think that we keep complaining about it, organising concerts, corporations are becoming eco-friendly, governments are taking an anti-globalisation stance but at the end of the day, what are WE doing?
It's something like that.
For example, "when the GST hikes, Malaysia switch from eating steaks to burgers, indonesian - burgers to chicken, singaporeans who used to eat at the famous steakhouse in clarke quay still eats at the famous steakhouse in clarke quay but they complain about it".
Life ironies.
